March 2013: Dogs with Attitude

Art can be such fun. Mummy and I love exploring Mawson Lakes and discovering art hidden in all sorts of places – in the parklands, the courtyards and the buildings. But the best art I’ve seen lately was at the Arts Showcase at Endeavour College. I was electrically charged by a wall of paintings depicting Dogs with Attitude.

Bright colours, big features and bold lines were painted by Year 9 students to represent different breeds of dogs in a pop art format. See surrounding pictures.

Talented art teacher Lauren DiCiaccio said she wanted her students to create a dog with personality that was modelled on the work of Chicago artist Tom Fedro who creates art that makes you smile out loud.

It certainly worked on mummy and me. Bold, whimsical, abstract art brought a big smile as it celebrated the joy brought to our lives by the diverse nature of our species.

Ms DiCiaccio told us on opening night that her students were taught how to create different visual effects and designs using simple lines, irregular shapes and thick heavy outlines filled with blocks of colour. What fun, what humour. What a lot of creative talent at Endeavour College. Thanks for inviting me to the exhibition.
Just one disappointment: I couldn’t see anything that came close to a representation of my breed!
