Erika, Luna and Nela from Finland |
I’m a dreamer. Mummy tells me that when I’m asleep my tail twitches, my legs shake and I whimper.
My best dreams are about family holidays, like our last adventure on the Limestone Coast. I dream of playing with mummy, daddy, Ben and Sophie on deserted beaches that stretch forever; of eating delicious meat pies from the bakery at Robe; of cycling the hills at Beachport and camping in our caravan at Southend under a full moon.
Recently I met another dreamer when I was walking along Dry Creek. Luna is a shiny brown labrador and she told me about her dreams of far-away places.
She and her little mate Nela (pictured) have just arrived from Finland. They had to travel a long way on a noisy aeroplane to get to Australia and then go into quarantine for 3 months in Melbourne. Luna said this is the stuff of doggie nightmares.
While locked up she dreamed of her carefree life in Finland, of swimming in the Baltic Sea and playing in the thick snow and of walks in her coastal village and eating raw fish. She said that her nose twitches when she dreams of the rich smell of malt from the brewery and the spicy pine leaves of Scandinavian trees. “Your gum trees are so strange,” she said to me.
Now Luna and Nela are reunited with their mummy Erika and they play along the green grassy banks of Dry Creek. They don’t understand English but that’s no problem for us; we just talked doggish. They say they are picking up the language from all the friendly people in Mawson Lakes who stop to say hello.
In 3 years time when they return to Finland I’m sure they will have many happy dreams of Mawson Lakes to take home.
